The discussion concerning the NY Times article (see digest for 23-26 Oct.
2nd part, with garbled subject line) continues, so I have again created a
2nd part with the continuance on that.

Two absolute favorites come to mind:
HealthWeb http://www.healthweb.org and the Megasite
http://www.lib.umich.edu/megasite
You can look at http://www.infotoday.com/supersearchers/ssmed.htm for
others which were recommended by the interviewees in Super Searchers on
Health & Medicine.

Subject: Beta Testers Needed for New National Cancer Institute Web Service
Hello,
The National Cancer Institute is in need of beta testers for our new
Instant Messaging service, "LiveHelp," a pilot program to provide search
and navigation support for users of NCI web pages. See
http://cancer.gov/livehelp/ for more information about the service.
We are looking for people with a health/medical background who are willing
to test the service for a minimum of 3 times between November 1-17 (about
1 hr. of total time) and provide constructive feedback about the service,
including responding to specific questions via e-mail during the testing
period, or returning to the service to try specific tasks or engage in
role playing.
If you are interested in testing this service and believe you fit our
profile, please respond to me with answers to the following questions:
1) Why do you want to test this new service?
2) What is your background and experience with cancer information
(degree, professional career interests, etc.)?
3) Are you available between the hours of 12-4 PM ET during November 1-17
to test the service?
Thank you for your interest in the products and services of the National
Cancer Institute.

we just started renewing for next year today -- I don't know about anyone

Subject: Pathetic UPDATE: National Medical Society - long
Sad, but true, I was conned.
Pay your $9.95 to the National Medical Society and you get the exact same
member ID and password as if you just pretend you "forgot" the ID and
password. If you're curious, it's "member" and "1881".
What is truly, truly sad is the ONLINE DIAGNOSIS part - which, come to
think of it - might be illegal. There doesn't appear to be a disclaimer
saying to go to your own doctor. Are they practicing medicine illegally?
You run through a series of questions, and get a diagnosis back.
Symptom says "Bleeding Gums - online diagnosis"
Open end question: Describe symptoms - I said gums bleed while brushing
teeth
"How many days..." I said 2
"How old is patient...." I said 46
"Does the patient have tooth pain?" NO
"Does the patient have jaw pain?" NO
Does the patient take aspirin?" As I clicked on NO, it brought me to the
next screen:
Bleeding Gums: Check compelete blood count platelet count, bleeding time,
partial thromboplastin time, international normalized ratio.
[remember...I said I'd only had it for two days]
Then I clicked on either "no splenomegaly or systemic rash" or
"Splenomegaly or systemic rash".
I clicked on NO.
THEN it asks whether I had an abnormal dental exam or a normal dental
exam. With a normal one, it says to check vitamin C levels. The Diagnosis:
INJURY WITH TOOTHBRUSH, EARLY SCURVY, OR PHENYTOIN USE.
I tried again with Shoulder pain, elbow pain, and arm pain.....
I didn't fill in ANYTHING except the age of the patient - 5 years old. I
clicked that the patient DID NOT have an arm injury. It brought me to this
diagnosis: angina pectoris, fibromyalgia, thrombophlebitis.
Just for grins, I tried Sexual Dysfunction. Didn't fill in the symptom
description, nothing.....except the age of the patient and the gender. Age
2. Gender female. Brought me to the screen to opt for: "low sexual
desire" or "anorgasmia" or "dyspareunia" or "vaginismus". Same thing for a
2 year old male: low libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory
dysfunction.
It appears that on every screen where there are check boxes, only the last
one makes a difference.
THIS IS A DEFINITE SCAM. At no time do they let you mail anything to them,
or have them mail anything to you, because then it would constitute mail
fraud. If you ask how to cancel your subscription, the instructions tell
to send written authorization to their subscription department, with all
the details.....by FAX. There is no mailing address on the site.
Well...it was fun.....and will end up in an article soon.

Subject: Customer Service Videos
Hi Medlibbers: Several months ago I asked for help re a short,
entertaining video on Customer Service. Several responded and I want to
say "THANKS" to you for your very helpful suggestions. Special thanks go
to Michele Edwards, Katherine Dedrick, Kathryn Evanc, Shannon Clever,
Kathy Martin and Vicky spitalniak for their recommendations, especially on
the FISH! video. It is short (17 minutes), entertaining and has a simple
but dynamic message from the employees of the Pike Fish Market in Seattle.
