Dear Latin Scholars
You are definitely into the next round following that starter for ten. I
now know that I needn't actually buy a Latin dictionary! I had no idea
there were so many Classicists out there.
For those who don't know and like to know these things the literal
translation turned out to be "not to be seen but to be". More
interesting suggestions were "seeing is believing" or even "Don't just
stand there gawping - BE something".
Either way the general consensus was that the phrase came from the
Danish Astronomer Tyco Brahe
(www.homestead.com/TychoBrahe/TychoBrahe.html). Any one else stuck with
a spot of Latin should apparently try latin.about.com - or of course,
this excellent list!
Many thanks
