Nigel,
Monograph has two senses in BSI's Documentation - Vocabulary (DD247):
(a) publication which is not a serial.
(b) <scholarly context> a discrete work of substantial size on a single subject and usually by a single author.
Presumably it is sense (b) that the publisher intended.

One of my clients is trying to get a manuscript published and he has been
informed by his prospective publisher that it would be more appropriate for
this to be published as a 'monograph' rather than as a 'textbook'. To most
of us a monograph is simply a book or non-serialised printed document so can
anyone throw any light on the distinction which is being made by this
publisher?
Any comments would be gratefully received. Thanks.
