British Universities Film & Video Council
Two posts in the British Universities Newsreel (Scripts) Project
Project Manager
Salary: circa £21,000 p.a.
Database compiler
Salary: circa £17,000 p.a.
Following the recent promotion of Luis Carrasqueiro, the British
Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC) is seeking to appoint a new
Project Manager, and an additional Database Compiler, to contribute to its
growing database relating to British cinema newsreels. The database
(www.bufvc.ac.uk/newsreels) is a listing of all British cinema newsreels
1910-1979, with full release, content and technical information, based on
the original newsreel issue sheets. A grant from the Arts and Humanities
Research Board has allowed the BUFVC to enrich this database with the
addition of digitised copies of original newsreel documentation such as
commentary scripts, shotlists and cameramen's dope sheets, all greatly
enhancing the database's value as an academic historical resource.
The Project Manager will maintain and develop the database by controlling
and contributing to the adding of the documents to the database.
Approximately 100,000 documents will require processing and keywording
before being included in the database, and the data augmented by further
research. Synopses on the existing database need to be expanded, which will
involve research into original paper sources and some viewing of the films
themselves.
The Database Compiler will work with the Project Manager in preparing
documents before they are scanned, adding information to the database,
keywording, writing synopses, and undertaking necessary further research.
Successful applicants are likely to be graduates who can demonstrate the
following:
* good keyboard skills
*
* experience in computerised cataloguing and database work
*
* an interest in archive film and British cinema
*
* good general knowledge of 20th century history
The Project Manager will be a qualified librarian or film archivist, while
the Database Compiler will have experience of computer database and library
work. The British Universities Newsreel (Scripts) Project, led by BUFVC's
Head of Information, Luke McKernan, is now in its second year of four, with
a completion date of July 2003. Appointments will be made on one-year
contracts, expected to be renewed annually for three years.
Working from offices in Central London, the BUFVC promotes the production,
study and use of film, television and related media in higher education and
research. It delivers a range of specialist publications and services and is
core-funded by JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee of the Higher
Education Funding Councils).
The employment package includes membership of the British Film Institute and
interest-free annual season ticket loan.
Applications should be submitted on or before 25th August 2000. Interviews
are planned to take place during the week commencing 4th September 2000.
