1. Human Resources In The NHS
Consultation on proposals for new Councils to regulate nursing, midwifery and the health professions
On 1 August the Government published, for consultation, its proposals for the new Nursing and Midwifery Council, to replace the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting and the new Health Professions Council to replace the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
New regulatory structures should have the welfare of patients at their heart and the proposals have been framed with that in mind. The department will be seeking views on a number of key issues including the size and composition of the new councils, and how best to enhance public protection by strengthening procedures for dealing with professionals who are unfit to practice. The consultation period ends on 1 November 2000.
The consultation papers are also be available on the internet by accessing www.doh.gov.uk/nmcconsult/ for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and www.doh.gov.uk/hpcconsult1 for the Health Professions Council. We are particularly keen to obtain a wide cross section of views notably those of patients, carers and their representatives.
For further information about the NMC, contact Sean King, HRD-ER4, Room 2E56, Quarry House, tel: 0113 254 6146 and for further information about HPC contact Joan Arnott HRD-ER4, Room 2E56, Quarry House, tel: 0113 254 5789.
