A good place to start is Dava Sobell "Meridian" - a short book which
explains quite a bit of this. Also, being Italian you will know that
Umberto Eco's novel "The Island of the Day Before" deals with this topic.
For more scholarly works, no doubt others can enlighten you. (I am just an
international lawyer, not an historian).
