Dear collegues
Some progress has been made on the border between
Uganda and Tanzania.
Uganda and Tanzania have resolved a long-standing
border dispute along the southern part of the country
in Mbarara district, reports James Mujuni.
Mr. Ngoma Ngime, the Mbarara resident district
commissioner, said on Saturday that the disputed
stretch of land at Kamwema has reverted to Uganda.
"Surveyors from Tanzania and Uganda worked jointly
through last month to come up with a conclusion that
the disputed area belonged to Uganda," he said.
The Uganda and Tanzanian officials were unclear on who
owned the estimated four-kilometre land between
Kikagati in Mbarara and Karagwe, Tanzania. "The
Tanzanians thought their border extended up to
Kikagati and would confiscate cattle from our
herdsmen," a Police officer said.
Ngoma Ngime said only a small tract of the
post-independence boundary reverted to Tanzania.

Pierre Zakia
