Spatial Information Systems (SIS). The faculty will teach and conduct
outreach and applied research in the Spatial Information Systems program.
The successful candidate will be hired at the assistant professor or
instructor rank depending on qualifications.
The Program
The SIS program approved by the 1999 Arkansas Legislature, will, when fully
developed, offer a B.S. degree in Spatial Information Systems and the A.S.
degree in land surveying. The program will be housed in the School of
Forest Resources and will eventually consist of five new faculty and three
new staff positions along with existing personnel in this discipline.
The School of Forest Resources has a very progressive GIS/Remote Sensing
laboratory, the Spatial Analysis Laboratory (SAL, http://sal.uamont.edu)
which is directed by Dr. Robert C. Weih ([log in to unmask]). The SAL is
involved in research and development in the areas of Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Remote Sensing, and Expert
Systems. The lab utilizes these technologies to focus on developing
applications and research to improve natural resource management. This is
accomplished by integrating state-of-the-art GIS facilities with expertise
of the faculty and staff of the Arkansas Forest Resources Center to evaluate
complex problems and provide solutions for more effective resource
management strategies.
The Position
The School is recruiting a faculty position with a starting date of June 1,
2000 or as soon thereafter as possible. The successful candidate will have
advanced degrees in spatial information sciences, such as Geographic
Information Systems, Global Positioning Systems, and/or Remote Sensing.
Ph.D. or doctorate near completion is desired; a master’s level education is
required. The position is a 12-month calendar year appointment. Duties
include teaching courses in the spatial sciences, such as introductory and
advanced courses in GIS and GPS, Computer Cartography, Remote Sensing, and
Spatial Statistics, and conducting programs of applied research and
outreach. The successful candidate will also assist in curriculum
development, program planning, and implementation of the program in Fall
