Dear All,
The next Workshop of Alpine Geological Studies (5th) will be organised by
our Austrian colleagues from the Innsbruck and Wien Universities in 2001
(18-20 September). You can find below the announcement for this
cross-disciplinary meeting that could interest the members of the
geometamorphism list, since the Alpine chain is one of the most reputed
test-laboratory of our models, ideas and working techniques. I received it
this morning by Hugo Ortner (Dr. Hugo Ortner/Institut fuer Geologie und
Palaeontologie/Universitaet Innsbruck/Innrain 52/6020 Innsbruck/Tel.
0512/507 5597/Fax. 0512/507 2914/email [log in to unmask]). You will
find the firts circular as attached file.
Hoping to meet many of you in Obergurgl

General information
The 5th Workshop of Alpine Geological Studies will be held at the village
of Obergurgl in the Ötztal from September, 18-20, 2001. Obergurgl is a
small village
located at an altitude of 1930 m in the centre of the Ötztal Alps. Well
known as ski resort, the surroundings offer a beautiful scenery and
spectacular outcrops
in basement rocks of the Ötztal-Stubai complex. In 1991 a frozen mummy was
found at a glacier pass SW of Obergurgl which soon became famous as the
Stone-Age "Ötzi".
Obergurgl also hosts the "Forschungsinstitut für alpine
Hochgebirgsforschung" (Research Institute of Alpine High-Mountain Studies),
which is affiliated with the
University of Innsbruck.
Weather in the Alps during September is typically cool and sunny, with low
temperatures possibly below freezing point during the nights. Warm and
water-proof
gear is required for all field trips.
Accommodation
Students may be accommodated in double rooms in the
"Universitäts-Sportheim" at Obergurgl at a reduced fee of about 21,8 Euro
(ATS 300.--, DM 43,--,
L. 42.215,--, SFr. 33,--, FFr. 143,--) per day (including breakfast and
dinner). Else, accommodation will be in 3- and 4-star hotels in Obergurgl.
Registration fees
The registration fee will be on the order of 120 Euro (ATS 1.652.--, DM
235,--, L. 232.400,--, SFr. 182,--, FFr. 788,--).
Student registration will be approximately 50% lower. The organising
committee encourages preregistration in order to facilitate budget
planning.
Deadlines
February 2001
Distribution of the second circular to
those who have responded to the preregistration
April 30, 2001
Deadline for submission of abstracts,
payment of registration and field trip fees
August 2001
Final program will be available on the
website
September 18-20, 2001
Meeting
Meeting Structure
The organisation committee welcomes contributions to all aspects of the
geology of the Alps. We propose the following symposia:
1.Kinematics of the Alpine belt
2.Tectonics and sedimentation
3.Neotectonics and challenges in Engineering Geology
4.Dating of deformation
5.Deep seismic structure of the Alpine belt (TRANSALP)
6.Changes in the Alpine landscape since the Neogene
7.How much memory do rocks preserve: The derivation of P-T-t-d paths
and consequences on Alpine geodynamics
8.Open session
The workshop will be held during a three day period. No parallel sessions
are planned. Poster sessions will not be held during oral presentations and
potential authors are encouraged to present their work as a poster. The
working language of the meeting will be English.
Field Trips
(1 day each)
As the 5th Workshop on Alpine Geological studies takes place in the middle
of the Alps, we plan to offer field trips in the Tyrol region. Especially
areas, where the TRANSALP deep seismic line crosses the Alps will be
visited.

Lower Inn Valley (Southern margin of the Northern Calcareous Alps,
TRANSALP Traverse):
Sedimentation and deformation of Molasse deposits on top of Alpine nappes
in the Inn Valley
(H. Ortner, V. Stingl)
E2, pre-Meeting, September17, 2001

(immediate vicinity of Obergurgl)
(J. Konzett, G. Hoinkes, P. Tropper)

Would you like to guide a field trip? Further field trips may be organized
depending on interest of the participants.
