The oft-quoted passage about wives submitting to husbands is from
Ephesians 5:22-29. KJV renders it: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your
own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife,
even as Christ is head of the church; and he is the savior of the body.

This passage is written by Paul, *not spoken by Jesus*. I am not aware
of anything similar attributed to Jesus, but others on the list more
familiar with the Gospels may correct me.

It is generally agreed that Ephesians was not written by Paul, actually,
but was, of course, attributed to him for political reasons (i.e., to
give it credibility). You are correct that it has been a cardinal text
in the subordination of women, along with the even more inisistently
hierarchical passages in 1 Timothy, which exhort slaves to be obedient
to their masters and wives to their husbands--of great interest to
Augustine, among many others.
