I am delighted that Anne Given, Mary Macleod and Wendy Sudbury have joined
this discussion.
As I said in my message of 08/02/200: 15:11
" Alongside the terms appropriate in different parts of the UK we should all
enter the relevant centuries ... That way someone could start an enquiry in
the south of England looking at (say) the Norman invasion, then go to (say)
Orkney and find out what was going on there at the same time..."
This seems to me to be very much along the same general lines as their
proposals.
It occurs to me that if we have a core or common list containing only
centuries (actually I would make it centuries and/or millennia, rather than
using the 3 Age System which can vary a bit) and alongside it a long list of
possible terms that people might wish to use in different SMR areas, this
will allow scope for all sorts of regional and local variation. In fact it
could create a fascinating historical atlas and a map of perceptions and
identities throughout Britain / Ireland ( or as far as Fishen extends) which
would be useful and instructive in itself.
