There is no doubt in my mind that ‘Post Medieval' should be a broad term for any term defining a period later than medieval.
Terms such as ‘Post Roman' should also be included in the thesaurus. How else would you record or search for items that are later than Roman but otherwise undated? Enter early medieval, medieval, modern, Pictish[?], post medieval etc....??
By theway, the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology - a fairly authoritative body we should assume - is interested in, quote:
"... the opening of the New World and European expansion overseas, the Renaissance and the Reformation, military and political upheavals, the industrial revolution and its aftermath, and the advancement of the sciences. "
(I accept that this does not of course settle the question of what to call the distinctive cultural period between the Reformation/Dissolution and the Industrial Revolution. I'd probably vote for 'Early Modern')
