Jim:
You're very cute, I'll give you that. Not terribly enlightening,
regrettably, but cute, at least. I am, in fact, on the road, though I
secretly harbor this e-mail addiction.
Here, again is your terribly enlightening conclusion:
"That's what 'altruism' means in Rand's philosophical
> lexicon--or so at least it seems to me at this stage of my investigations."
Um, lest you not spot it, your conclusion begins with a
demonstrative. This demonstrative, unfortunately, holds the key to your
conclusion. It is this demonstrative, I should note, that is not true,
unfortunately.
What's not true--and I really am on the road and running to make two
deadlines with trucks and moving equipment in the next five hours--I'll
have to explain in greater depth later. I take it, however, that what's
not true, unfortunately, is the claim that (what at this point in your
investigations you seem to suggest) altruism is merely a substitute for
philosophies like communism, socialism, and Marxism. Part of Rand's
position, as I read it, lambastes the "leader" philosophers (yes, she does
target them as Marxists) with overwhelming the APA by means of a vote. In
other words, she complains that there is a sort of tyranny of the majority
in the APA.
Check it out and then get back to me, but try not to be so cutesy with
your phraseology. Do this, and I'll try to be clearer with my comments.
