hello,
I am have so far been a passive participant in this list on
environmental ethics. I have found the recent conversation about global
warming, especially some of the cited links, to be very informative.
However, there has been an irresponsible amount of name calling and
tedious personal remarks. Are we after a good dialogue from which each
of us can learn, or are we having contests over who can pee the
farthest?
Global warming is indeed an uncertain thing. However, anyone who has
ever picked up an intro. level biology or ecology textbook can find
conclusive empirical proof that we live amongst, have evolved along
with, and depend upon living things that have yet unknown symbiotic
(both parasitic and mutualistic) relationships. We are talking about
macro, macro stuff here when we speak of global warming and any ethic we
adapt towards the sky should be as fluid and changing as the vapors that
form the clouds within it. Climatology is still in its infancy and, in
my opinion, the precautionary principle may be the best course of action
for our great great great grandchildren.
peace,
Bryan
