EDITOR'S SPACE
Readers of this newsletter seem to be increasing still - for
those who have joined us for the first time, welcome to you all.
And tell your colleagues.
The Ordinary General Meeting of the Design Research Society is
to be held at the Royal College of Art in London on the 1 April.
Whilst this is a formal event for existing DRS members, we do
this year have additional attractions, and will welcome all who
may be interested in joining the DRS to come along and meet the
Society's Members. You will be most welcome. The shops of
Kensington are but a short walk away too... There will be a
presentation of the Design Studies Award to last year's winners,
and Professor Nigel Cross will speak on aspects of design
research. If you are able, please come. Full details are below.
The IDATER organisers have had a change of mind over final dates
for submission of papers this year, and seem to be operating a
'just in time' system this time around. This gives referees
more time, and as a consequence submission of abstracts to the
DRS day is not yet closed. The NEW DEADLINE for ABSTRACTS for
the DRS session is now 31 March 2000. So those of you that had
contacted me intending to submit, please get those papers in
now. For those who missed it previously, I am repeating the
conference call below.
The Doctoral Education conference at La Clusaz is shaping up
into a great event, and we are releasing details of fees and
registration in this edition of the newsletter.
As there has been a rush of announcements this month, I am
listing most of them only very briefly with a URL.

DESIGN STUDIES AWARD
We are pleased to announce the winner of the 1999 Design Studies
Award, for the best paper published in the journal for that year.
The award is to be made to Petra Badke-Schaub (University of
Bamberg) and Eckart Frankenburger (Heidelberger Druckmaschinen
AG), Germany, for their paper on Analysis of Design Projects,
published in Design Studies vol. 20, no. 5, pp. 465-480.
The Design Studies Award is made annually, jointly by Elsevier
Science, the journal publishers, and the Design Research Society.
It comprises a certificate and a prize of 500. The criteria for
the Award, in order of priority, are: contribution to the
development of the field of design research, originality of
research or scholarship, breadth of relevance, and clarity and
style of presentation. Votes for the Award are cast by the
journal Editors and Officers of the DRS.
Badke-Schaub's and Frankenberger's paper is based on their
investigations of the complex conditions of modern engineering
product development, in which design teams have to collaborate
in a variety of projects under time constraints, to meet high
quality requirements at low prices. They conducted empirical
observations in German industry, and the paper highlights
results related to mechanisms that lead to success or failure in
product development.

IDATER 2000 - FINAL, FINAL, CALL FOR PAPERS
The new dates for the DRS session are:
Final date for submission of ABSTRACTS: 31 March 2000
Final date for submission of FULL PAPERS: 31 May 2000
IDATER is an established annual International Conference on
Design and Technology Educational Research and Curriculum
Development organised by the Department of Design and Technology
at Loughborough University, UK. The conference attracts a wide
audience from all those who are involved with, or are interested
in, the development of design and technology curricula and
pedagogy in schools, colleges and higher education throughout
the world.
For the fourth successive year, the Design Research Society will
again be collaborating in organising a strand in the final day
of the IDATER conference. This has previously proved a highly
successful addition to the conference which attracts design
researchers worldwide.
IDATER 2000 will take place from 21-23 August 2000. The DRS
session will be held on the final day of the conference, 23
August 1999.
THE DRS THEME FOR IDATER 2000
In the universities, design research is now well established, is
widely disseminated, and is valued by the academic community.
Research has yet to be valued fully by practising designers. The
aim of this IDATER theme is to inform this subject area by the
publication of high quality papers dealing with interactions
between research in the academy and design practice. This may
include, among others, the following topics:
* designers as researchers; researchers as designers
* databases of design information; design knowledge
* aspects of creativity and designerly thinking
* design guidelines and standards
* research into the management of design
* information requirements of practising designers
* using empirical research in design practice
* case studies of design research in action
* case studies of design practice
* collaboration between universities and design practice or
industry
Papers are of course not limited to academic researchers, and
contributions from practising designers in consultancy and
industry will be most welcome. There is usually a large number
of authors from outside the UK.
Conference papers will be blind refereed. DRS referees are
coordinated by Dr. David Durling of Staffordshire University.
Initial enquiries about the content of papers may be addressed
to him at <[log in to unmask]> though papers and abstracts
should be sent direct to the conference organisers.
Authors should initially submit a ONE PAGE OUTLINE of the
proposed paper to the Conference Organiser, shown below. The
outline should indicate the nature and scope of the paper.
Outline papers are being accepted NOW.
UK based presenters should note that the conference proceedings
are edited fully before the conference and are included in the
delegate's pack, thus bringing the publication well within the
period of RAE2001.
Outline papers (clearly marked 'DRS') must be sent to the
conference organiser from whom application forms and guidelines
are available:

Doctoral Education in Design: Foundations for the Future
An international conference
La Clusaz, France
8 - 12 July, 2000
Organized by
Norwegian School of Management Nordic Innovation Project
Design Research Society
ICS - Interactive Coaching Services
Co-sponsored by
The Norwegian School of Management Center for Knowledge
Management
Staffordshire University, Advanced Research Institute
CONFERENCE
The past five years have seen a dramatic growth in all areas of
design research. New professional demands, emerging research
streams, and the new educational challenges of the knowledge
economy are reshaping the context of design. As universities
around the world develop models of doctoral education in design,
the challenges involved mirror these larger forces.
This conference will focus on four central themes: 1)
philosophies and theories of design, 2) foundations and methods
of design research, 3) form and structure for the doctorate in
design, 4) the relationship between practice and research in
design.
A distinguished international group will meet at Doctoral
Education in Design to consider these issues. Participants will
present findings, debate ideas, and propose benchmarks for the
future development of the PhD in design. Participants will
interact and confer in each session and in breakout workshops.
This conference will encourage significant working relationships
among participants, leading to research alliances and
partnership agreements among schools.
A careful refereeing process will select papers. The number of
participants will be limited to ensure a high quality
international audience positioned to make decisions on the
future of doctoral education in design within their
universities. We also believe that such an audience will be able
to generate a broad dialogue useful to the wider field. Selected
papers will be published in a conference book.
Conference sessions:
Session 1. Philosophies and theories of design. The character
and epistemology of a field define its parameters. Exploring
these issues will be a central issue of the next decade for
doctoral education in design and for design research. We must
articulate a philosophy of design that considers the general
principles under which the phenomena of design are comprehended,
explained, and structured. Session 1 will address the central
challenges in the philosophy of science and theory development
for the field of design.
Session 2. Foundations and methods of design research. There is
no single set of research methods for design research. A rich
diversity of methods has been developed for the field of design
and adapted from other fields with new methods under
development. We have begun to examine the foundations of these
methods for suitability and rigor. The simultaneous location of
design research within natural science, social science,
technology and the humanities poses unique challenges to the
issue of method. Session 2 will examine these issues and
highlight areas of strength and weakness in current method and
directions for fruitful application..
Session 3. Form and structure for the doctorate in design. A
doctorate in design may be awarded in several subject
disciplines and involve a range of doctoral traditions. Despite
differences, there seems to be a common form to the PhD project
based on a written thesis with an oral defense. While many
issues in design research and doctoral traditions vary from
field to field, there is strong consensus on issues of form and
structure. Session 3 will attempt to develop an international
consensus statement on appropriate forms of PhD study that will
be useful at the local level while helping to develop the field
across national boundaries. The session will also attempt to
establish international guidelines helpful to directors of
doctoral programmes and doctoral supervisors. Finally, the
session will consider issues of program and department structure
appropriate to the integrative and interdisciplinary nature of
doctoral programs in design.
Session 4. The relationship between practice and research in
design. Design integrates several fields with different research
traditions and competing methodological claims. The relationship
between theory and practice poses a challenging problem for
doctoral education in design. Design disciplines such as
engineering or computer systems have well established doctoral
traditions. Others, such as industrial design or information
design, have hardly begun. The relationship between practice and
theory is a challenge in established fields and new areas. This
gives rise to debate on what is called "practice-based
research." Session 4 will address the general issue of the
relationship between practice and theory and the specific issue
of "practice-based research."
