Richard Maine remarked about two differences between x and x(:). Here's
one more: x(:) never has the POINTER attribute. Thus after y=>x, y has
the same target as x if x is associated, and is not associated if x is
not. After y=>x(:), The target of y is x(:) if x is associated, but
the statement is an error if x is not associated.
