>What's wrong with classifying painting, photography, and film as
technology?
How about calling film a technology driven Art? From Muybridge's first
'films' of horses at the gallop full circle to the multi-camera freeze
frames of the Matrix, progression in the technological means of expression
have dictated form and content. Most of this progress has taken place in
the realm of photography: new lenses and film stocks, better ways to move
the camera (steadi-cam, cranes with remote pan and tilt), matte and digital
compositing of images, etc. Soon digital origination will allow the
cinematographer to vary contrast and colour at will, expanding the creative
potential currently restricted by the inherent characteristics of film
stock.
