A Northern region research and rolling seminar project on artist residencies
is launched next week. It is organised by the Centre for Cultural Policy
Research of the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and funded by
Northern Arts as a contribution to the national Year of the Artist
programme.
>From 10th October you will be able to visit the YOTA web site at
www.yearoftheartist.com and take part in an on-line debate about the nature
of residency. In the special interests section you can read a discussion
paper written by Kevin Stephens which explores the nature of residency and
sets it in a historical context. You can make your contribution to the
debate following a number of threads, for example:
What are the key elements in the relationship between the artists and the
place of a residency? To what extent is change, on the part of the artist or
within the community, an essential ingredient?
To what extent has the development of agencies to facilitate artist
residencies made a difference to the style and character of residencies?
How do the varied needs of artists in a variety of art-forms impact upon
residencies?
How can the needs and demands of the many different types of Ścommunitiesą
which engage artists be realised through residencies and by what means can
such arts projects be realised successfully?
What audiences are there for residencies?
To what extent do the policies, priorities and strategies of the funding
bodies which support residencies have an effect on the style and character
of residencies?
Has the development of processes of effective evaluation of residencies
helped to change the style and character of subsequent residencies?
In addition to these specific threads more general contributions will be
possible. The debate will lead to a further publication refining and
extending the ideas in the discussion paper. In addition there will be
Northern Region and national seminars to debate the issues in more detail.
