Nate, my thought is: when, historically speaking, did we develop our sweet
tooth(s)(eeth)? What was/is/ has been the price? I've always liked the lyric
of Beiderbecke's 'Sugar'... 'She's so refined'. Led on to the lawyers'
anthem, Waller's 'Sweet Sue' .
In his childhood the poet probably gazed at the lion on the cans of
Golden Syrup or rather the carcass of said beast, with a nest of bees
nestled therein and the motto 'Out of strength, sweetness' or suchlike. Lot
about bees and honey too in his work 'out of the skip iron and honey' (i
misquote i think) but bees have many mythological reverberations as well as
being 'busy' ('freely bees arise.. PTW). Golden Syrup was i think Tate &
Lyle & their sugar cube man was i think the figurehead on the Daily Express,
Beaverbrooke's newspaper & a bastion of Conservatism in Britain.
Best,
John
ps What does 'enlightened states' mean to you in line one of Triodes? Isn't
it traditional for a poet to set his scene thus early??
