A demand for political relevance in poetry... ok. What else is new.
There are many many writers out there, mixing poetry and fiction and
reportage, getting off their duffs and going around looking, and
writing. Whether what they write achieves something of the weight
of experience or captures "some affluence... of the world of which
they were a part" (Stevens, "The Planet on the Table") - well, what
else is there to do? Poetry is always more various & subtle than our
demands - and reality is always more than poetry can express. But
then poems that succeed in being themselves are equal, in their
way, to reality. Or take their rightful place in realitty.
