cris - what a fascinating melange - I wish I had the
time to consider it - theatre and theatricality being
at war with art is a knotty one - which theatre? which
art? Theatre itself as abstract or all the theatre
that's done, from Lloyd Webber to Stein? - However,
this statement struck me -
Smithson reads Smith's account
> of '"a dark pavement"
> that is '"punctuated by stacks, towers, fumes and
> colored light"', as
> referring to the "language" and "building" of
> 'linguistic sense-data, not
> rational categories', that are the 'raw materials of
> communication'. For
> Smithson, 'without linguistic awareness there is no
> physical awareness'.
> Articulation of experience is a necessary moment of
> closure in order that
> perception can register.
I would say the other way around - without physical
awareness there is no possibility of linguistic
awareness - do cats have no notion of space? How do
they land on the pavement with all four feet? That
statement surely means really only awareness of
awareness by another, that awareness as an idea is
wholly socially mediated - I'm _not_ so sure. Not
denying the social by any means.
have a good weekend all.
Best
