yes I know we've been on this merry-go-round before, but I am not
suggesting an abandonment of preference. Nor a permission to do away with
all sense of preferring one thing to another. That misses the point
altogether. I am not saying that all comics are good imho or that this form
of speed garage is better than vim r&b nor nothing like that. I'm not
saying that 'pop' is per se 'good' or anything as silly. I *am* arguing
that Alan Moore's work on say 'The Watchmen' or 'V For Vendetta' or 'Swamp
Thing' and 'The Slits Peel Sessions' are as keen a source for pleasure and
study as say whomever from given social and political context. You can mix
and match names at will, this is only an example.
I don't feel that curiosity is a relatively 'low' power of perception. It
is a perceptual motor and drives further (not higher) engagements. First
thought might be 'best' but not necessarily so - test it against another
perhaps. I don't think of curiosity as a flit, but as a moment or point of
initial contact (not the Jodie Foster variety either). I think of this in
terms of the 'whatever' (as in Agamben) states of attention, gates of
liminal endeavour or occurrences of immanence.
Curiosity can be read as entry into predisposed groove, but it might also
be the beginning of engagements with something else, the previously ignored
or predisposed against but for that acknowledged moment of possible entry.
My argument is to walk and talk and listen with a sense of the possible
interest and import of everything, all day every day. Pursue those senses
of the possible. Of course my life experience plays into this, sometimes i
think i've seen too much.
What we're doing with 'things not worth keeping' is asking these serious
questions about discrimination and value. One's person's scrap of paper is
another's poem - what one would discard another would treasure. This
strikes us as being worth pursuing through open conversation and active
engagements with possibility. The title is deliberately slippery.
