Book History Postgraduate Student Network Study Day
13 November 2000
I write with some regret to say that the above Study Day is
cancelled.
We've taken the decision, somewhat reluctantly, to cancel for the
following reasons:
1. The current unpredictability of the rail network. Railtrack have
just, without warning, closed two more sections of the network [in the
Midlands and in the South-west] and it seems foolish to assume that all
will be well in time for far-flung postgraduates to arrive in London for
the Study Day without major delays.
2. The 'deadline' set by the fuel tax protestors means that 13th
could be a day of action involving blocking motorways.
3. The applications for attendance and offers to speak we've
received by the deadline are fewer than usual, and we are worried that
we have chosen a topic which is too narrow to draw in as many of our
members as usual.
We have therefore decided to postpone the above Study Day and hold it
after Christmas - probably in March, again at the St Bride Printing
Library.
We're sorry to disappoint you and would like especially to thank
those of you who had offered contributions to the November meeting. We
will of course return cheques to those who have already paid.
For the future, we'd be very grateful if you could give some thought
about venues and about topics for meetings. We would be grateful to
receive your ideas and would be especially glad to hear from people who
would be interested in hosting Study Days. As you know, we try to
alternate times [weekdays and weekends] and places [London and
non-London] to try to involve as many people as possible. If you would
like to host a study day we are happy to support in practical ways like
sending out mailings and publicity. Hosting day events of this kind can
be a useful opportunity for postgraduates to hone their organisational
skills, to add to their cvs, and to impress their supervisors! If you'd
like to have a go, please do volunteer.
