On the recent subject of publishing and prices ... sometimes it all seems
rather a thankless task! After trailing my own book around various
publishers who all told me it was too specialised, I decided to publish it
myself. I'd already funded the research, but felt I owed it to all the
informants (or, in many cases, their descendants) to get something into
print. I specially
kept the price low (from £9.50 to £14 depending on where I post it to) but
I'm nowhere near breaking even, and it's sad to think I should probably
have charged more. Overseas postage is a
real problem, plus my bank takes its £5 worth of any non-UK bank cheques as
well. There's an awful lot of hidden charges involved in getting one's work
out into the big wide world, and many of them are beyond the author's or
the publisher's control.
