Carol and Don,
Your replies are really helpful to me, and I hope to others following this
thread. Thanks a lot.
As I recalled the melody of "Yesterday" the F and G aren't sharpened in the
"all my troubles" phrase. However, I have just unearthed my venerable piece
of 1960s vinyl and listened to the original again (for the first time in
heaven knows how long), and guess what? F# and G# are there, sure enough,
which as you say, Carol, means we are in the melodic minor, since they
disappear when the melody descends later. So yes, Don, I was changing the
tune - albeit inadvertently because of faulty memory. Oops! Simon's wrong
again. Oh well...
Incidentally, does this tell us anything about the "folk process" in melody
retention?;o)
Cheers
Simon
