Dear All
I was under the impression that the Society of Archivists would not permit the
advertising of posts in the careers opportunities circular with starting
salaries less than £15,210. In the recent edition of CO there is a post
advertised by Wigan Council with a starting salary of £12,192, salary scale
3/5. I suppose in their defence they do mention that the post might be suitable
for people "aiming towards a postgraduate qualification in archive
administration" so perhaps they are not seeking a qualified archivist. However
probably the most worrying aspect of the advert is that the successful
candidate will be "expected to run the record office in Leigh" - unqualified
and on a salary of £12,192.
How can we expect the profession to be taken seriously when there are still
posts like this being offered and advertised by the SoA.
regards
Aoife Martin
