Colleagues
What follows may be seen as using the listserv for a personal message.
However, it does have some implications for the speed of service that the
NRM Archives Section will be able to give over the next month or so, so my
conscience is salved. I'm posting this message to the list because I
realised that the alternative was drafting hundreds of individual emails
which would eat into the time that I am currently trying to save!
Following a recent hospital consultation I have been told that I have a
growth in my throat that shouldn't be there, and that as a consequence I
will have to have it removed surgically asap. At the moment I've been told
that this "should" happen before Christmas, but I will only be given two to
three days notice.
As is always the case this rather unwelcome news coincides with another
contretemps, in this case the fact that the other 50% of my department is
departing this week for pastures new. Until we can recruit a replacement
our response time to enquiries is going to be unavoidably extended, and I
would appreciate it if colleagues could bear this in mind if you are trying
to contact us or referring members of the public to us.
In the run up to the op. I am under doctors's orders to avoid as much
talking as possible, as the growth is on one of my vocal cords, and
extended talking is aggravating it. Many of those who know me may regard
this as no more than the most apposite poetic justice...
On that basis the more communications that come to me by email or post
(rather than 'phone) the better. I have been told that I may need speech
therapy after the operation, so this request might continue in force for
some time (no information as yet). Again, if you could mention this to
any enquirer that you are passing on to us that would be helpful.
I must stress that there is no reason to regard this surgery as anything
other than a routine, albeit inconvenient, procedure, so please bear with
me and we should be back to what passes here for normal in the New Year
regards
Richard Taylor
