Some years ago (ten? fifteen?) there was a note in the HMS Newsletter (I
think) about the use of charcoal in modern blast furnaces in Brazil.
Someone (Charles Blick?) checked with the company involved and reported
that the charcoal was pelletised to reduce its reactivity and then used
just like coke.
Now I have been searching through old issues of the newsletter and haven't
been able to locate that note. Can anyone help?
