I haven't checked lately because I haven't needed any but cut nais were
available certainly in the 1960s in the UK. They were last used for securing
softwood floorboards.
I think what the enquiry is about is hand made nails with hot forged heads.
These were made in nailors shops from nailrods that were slit from wrought
iron plate. They were very rapidly replaced by machine made cold headed wire
nails when these became available probably at the beginning of this century.
