There is little to add to the comments of David Killick and Thilo Rehren.
As an additional and sometimes extremely useful method I would suggest to
regard the polished samples under dark field conditions. This gives a good
idea wether observed phases are really opaque and of the color of translucent
oxides and silicates - even if there are no polished thin sections available.
One of the major difficulties to "determine" the mineralogy with
b/w-photographs is the lack of an internal standard of grey (Graukeil).
