We of course do not know what they were for. I think it was the Romans who
assumed they were some sort of currency. It seems much more likely that they
were (valuable!) trade items for distribution from the smelter to the
smiths. The shaped ends could be a primitive test to show that not only
could you forge the iron into a bar but it could be shaped too.
