Dr. Charles Swann, Prof. Emeritus and former Director of the Bartol Research
Institute at the Univ. of Delaware, will be presenting a paper on the Albemarle
Iron Works (1771-72), South Garden, Virginia, USA at the ICNMTA-International
Conference on Nuclear Microprobe Technology and Applications on September 13th
or 14th in Bordeaux, France. The paper will discuss the PIXE and SEM analysis
performed on slag from the late 18th century cold blast charcoal furnace.
The slag analysis confirmed that the furnace had a severe titanium contamination
problem. This coupled with a lack of blast furnace experience by the partners
and ironmaster resulted in the furnace being permanently shutdown after less
than a year of operation. The analysis also demonstrated that the iron produced
was cold short. I am listed as a co-author, but will not be at the conference.
