we are currently analysing artefacts from early Roman
levels at carlisle, which are waterlogged & have dendro
dates,
mature timbers has been used eg a medieval site at
Castelshaw excavated by Manchester Arch Unit,
Our resreach around Rievaulx N yorks, have recoevred
reasonable quantities of charcoal, but mostly either
fragmentary or thin branch, and mostly alder. We have arch
mag dates for the furnace
