Theophilus mentions (in chapter 92) a method of hard soldering iron with copper as solder, all packed into a clay-shell before heatened.
I´ve been working with some Swedish Viking age materials (sintered clay-sherds) probably emerging from a similar process - the process of soldering copper alloy-coatings onto iron weights. Ongoing research is now confirming that this was an extensively used method for soldering in Scandinavia; not only used for weights but also for other objects; since at least the Migration period and up into the later Middle ages (the 12th c and maybe the 13th c).
Concerning earlier research on this technology, I haven´t been able to find much in available literature. Does anyone connected to this list know any cases from Britain or the Continent were evidence like this have emerged, and the resources where this might be mentioned?
I´ve been told that this method was - at least until recently - still in use in Portugal for brazing cattle bells.
Yours
Anders Söderberg
