Since I wrote about this I have had other thoughts about it. What brass are
you using? Brass wire/rod/sheet will probably be 70/30 brass, with a melting
point not much less than copper. Do you know what brass they were using?
Maybe Peter Northover or someone else on the list will know. It is possible
to make brass by the cementation process with higher zinc contents than 30%
which can only be cast. It is even possible that they made "brazing metal"
specially in some brass works (or sold their unworkable failures). It might
even command a higher price and be cheaper to make.
