Dear all,
I have placed a draft of an article, 'Blast furnace operation in Song-Yuan
China' (that's ca. AD 960-1368) on the Web, at
http://staff.hum.ku.dk/dbwagner/SongBF/SongBF.html
I will be sending it to a journal soon, after I have taken care of the last
details, but it seems to be in good enough shape that it makes sense to put
it to you all now and ask for help and criticism of all kinds, on matters
large and small.
If a journal accepts the article they will probably require me to remove it
from the Web, so please don't put links to it on public web sites.
There is something for everyone here, excavations of very peculiar blast
furnaces, a poem by Su Dongpo on the use of coal in blast furnaces, a
Swedish source on Prince Rupert's experiments ...
I sent the query on Brazilian charcoal blast furnaces to the
Archaeometallurgy discussion list - thank you all for the many responses -
because I wanted to use it as an example of the 'fact' that modern blast
furnaces need a fuel which is less reactive than charcoal. That problem now
seems more complicated than I had realised, so for the moment I have just
left the text as originally written.
Regards,
Don Wagner
