We are also receiving requests from UK and Republic of Ireland students for
early release of their summer cheques. In the case of the Republic of
Ireland students we have been requested by the Education Committees of
several Counties to give the students their cheques early. As to the UK,
one Authority as requested us give out their cheques early, others give the
impression that once we have them then it is up to us when we give them
out. We are telling the students who ask for their cheque that we can only
hand them out at the start of our term, but on several occasions we have had
to write letters to the students'landlords who are pressing for rent. Our
summer term this year began on 8 May and ends 31 May so the students have
had to stretch out their grants from 5 Jan to 8 May. If the amounts could
have been split into term weeks instead of three equal amounts it would have
been better for the students. I am sure though that this would have had
administration difficulties

Subject: Student GRANT cheques

Our Summer term starts on 2nd May and this is the day of distribution
of the third term GRANT cheques. We are having problems with
students who want their cheque prior to the Easter break. In the
main requests are from our Republic of Ireland students who have had
their Education Committee write to us with a request to release the
third instalment early.
It is our University Policy to have the third term cheques available
on the first day back after the Easter break. If we were to allow
certain students to have their cheque early we would be inundated
with students saying "They've got theirs why can't we have ours?"
Is anyone having similar problems? Or are we being too strict?
