ALPHAGALILEO AND THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION FESTIVAL OF SCIENCE
There will be an AlphaGalileo desk within the Press Centre during this
year's Festival. Manned by the new UK National Officer the desk will be
able to scan and input news releases on to the site, based on papers
given at the Festival. The Festival this year runs from Wednesday 7
September until Tuesday 12th.
If your organisation has a speaker at the Festival please contact either
the AlphaGalileo desk or the BA Press Centre and they will explain how
your release can be added to AlphaGalileo. If you are new to the service
please read our posting policy first. It's available online at
<http://www.alphagalileo.org/posting.cfm>.
FRENCH PRESIDENCY OF THE EU
The French science minister Roger-Gérard Schwartzenberg has made
AlphaGalileo one of his priorities for the 6 months of the French
Presidency. A European science news service is a key tool to support a
European research area. The AlphaGalileo service will be demonstrated at
international conferences in Grenoble and Nice this autumn as well as in
Paris during French Science Week in mid-October.
RESEARCH INTO THE IMPACT OF ALPHAGALILEO
This autumn it is hoped that two complimentary pieces of research to be
carried out in the UK and in France will demonstrate how effective we
have been so far and point out ways in which we may need to change and
improve.
The UK research will be undertaken by MORI (Market & Opinion Research
International Limited) who are perhaps better-known in Britain for their
political opinion polls. The research will be primarily quantitative with
over 100 user journalists and non-user journalists contacted by phone. A
smaller sample of French and German journalists will also be contacted.
The French research which is still at preliminary planning stage, will be
qualitative research into the impact of the service on French journalists.
If any journalists do not wish to be contacted, and you haven't already
done so, please contact Peter Green <[log in to unmask]> and
he'll take your name off the list that will go to the research companies.
NEW UK NATIONAL OFFICE
The University of Leicester has been appointed by the British Association
to act as UK National Office to promote the service and science
communication in general within the UK. The work will be carried out by
Jean Collins <[log in to unmask]>. Her primary target will be
UK university and commercial research organisations.
