Don't have much from New Mexico but you could probably pinch some of
the stories from Colorado, California or Arizona and mix them in
without anyone being any the wiser. (Since I just read something
about Wyatt Earp up in Idaho I guess folks pretty much travelled
around a lot in those days).
If you want authenticity you could go for things like
"The Gold Seekers Manual" by D Ansted (which you can get from
University Microfilms) 1849.
There are stories of the prospector type in
Lost Gold by Mildred Fielder North Plains press, Aberdeen S. Dak 1978
which are tales from 1833 to 1900.
Hidden in the Chaparrel by Phyllis Gerrnes tales from 1848 to 1860
(published by the author) - mainly tales from around Sacremento
Mining Frontiers of the Far West 1848 - 1880 by Roman Paul University
of New Mexico Press (1963 and 1974) - includes some on New Mexico
Gold Rushes and Mining Camps of the Early Midwest by Vardis Fisher
and Opal Holmes - Caxton Printers, 1979
(and these are the ones on the first shelf I came to).
If you want more refs drop me a direct e-mail and we can correspond off line

>Me and my big mouth...I was talking with my supervisor (I work for a high
