You are in luck! Agricola's book, 'De Re Metallica' is still in print - in
English. It was translated about 80 years ago by a guy named Hoover , an
engineer, who went on to become President of the USA!

Subject: How early do you go?
Dear list,
I am just beginning a PhD in science communication past and present with
special reference to mechanics and technology. I would dearly like to
include some mining related information in my study and to that end have
been observing the list for a couple of weeks - VERY interesting.
However, I am wondering if anyone can go back to the 16th Century or
before. I know it's asking a lot but humour me, I have a background in
Medieval history and literature. I once heard someone talking about George
Bower's(?) early technical manual to mining, "Assaying Techniques" (?) but
have failed miserably to find any references to it.
I am hereby asking the experts.... Julie Wardman
