Most of you will have hear about Westgarth Forster Jr who wrote 'A Treatise
on a section of the strata...' in 1807. However, very few know that his
sister, Phoebe, married to a man named Brown, wrote 'Emma, or the miner's
cottage,a moral tale' in 1819. It was published in Alston in 1821 and
describes in some detail how the poachers were dealt with.Few of you will be
interested in it as a moral tale, but as a first hand account of how the
miners were going on, it is well worth reading.
At 24 sides of A4, now that I have re-keyed it, it's too long to publish
here! If anyone wants a copy, please email me personally and I'll send it in
Word 2000 format.
