In 1984, the British Geological Survey published a Catalogue of Mine
Information for the Lake District and South Cumbria held by the Northern
England Office. The Catalogue is laid out in a similar mannerto the
Abandoned Mine Catalogue originally produced by the Inspectorate except
none of the unique abandonment plan reference numbers are incorporated
into the catalogue. About the time it was published the Geological Survey
were involved in various operations in the area. They had recently
published, then, the South Cumbria Memoir which dealt with iron Ore -
plans and sections very well reproduced. It is feasible that at this time
BGS had borrowed the plans from the Mines Inspectorate. They would have
moved by then to Bootle, lancashire from Millbank, London. When the North
of England Office (Newcastle) closed down the plans would have been moved
to the Edinburgh Office.
It would be interesting to compare the BGS published list with the
inspectorates abandoned mines catalogue. My opinion, for what it
is worth, is that the plans should now be handed over to the Cumbria
Record Office, if they are the original abandonment plans for Cumbria and
South Lancashire
