A good introduction is "Private Owner Wagons" by Bill Hudson (Oakwood Press
1996 ISBN 0 85361 492 X).
The same author had written four album style books for Oxford Publishing,
and later reprinted them himself - he has a secondhand railway bookshop at
Matlock station.
There are several other, more specialised, books around (of varied
quality), some probably out of print by now. Plus there are various
on-going research projects into even more specialised areas.
Any particular area of interest?
