Checking the electronic version of the Telegraph (via their search
engine) the last entry on this I could find was
"A CHAPTER of industrial history closed yesterday when the last pit
ponies ended their shift and went into retirement 250 years after the
first started work.
After leaving Pant-y-gasseg drift mine, near Pontypool, south Wales,
Gremlin, 25, and Robbie,
seven, will live in an RSPCA sanctuary near Milton Keynes. The cost
of the ponies' care will be met
by the Pit Ponies Protection Fund, administered by the RSPCA."
This was from the 26th May 1999.
