The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) has taken its first steps in
providing spatial searching of its on-line catalogue of 300,000 records.
Users of ArchSearch can now define geographical areas using national
grid referencing schemes such as the Ordnance Survey (OS) and Ordnance
Survey Ireland (OSI). Map references for the southwest and northeast
corners of an area of interest are entered in a simple form. Thus it is
now possible to examine the wider context of a site of interest or to
look at spatial distributions within specified areas.
A number of other spatial interfaces are currently under development by
the ADS. It is planned to release clickable map searching later in the
summer. Consideration is also being given to the usability and
functionality of Web-GIS.
