Netskills Workshop:
Content Management on the Web
Using XML, Style Sheets, Metadata and Dynamic HTML
09:30 - 16:30 Thursday 22nd June 2000 University of Wales, Aberystwyth
Web page creators are often frustrated by the limitations of HTML in
delivering structured content in a presentable format. One of the
drawbacks of HTML is that it can sometimes fail to satisfy as either as
good presentational language, or a good way of structuring information.
A number of new developments are at hand which will revolutionise how
web content is created and managed, without the need for expensive
tools or programming expertise. XML is much spoken about, but not
widely understood, and its potential is untapped, along with Style
Sheets in CSS or XSL and the use of Metadata, RDF and dynamic HTML.
This workshop explains and investigates these new developments both in
concept and in practice, providing a basis from which web authors can
start to explore a new era of web content creation and management.
This workshop is aimed at anyone who has created web pages in HTML and
wishes to learn about new developments in content creation and
management. It is not a web server or systems administration workshop.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* A beginners guide to XML (the eXtensible Markup Language)
* Using Style Sheets to separate content from appearance.

* An overview of developments in linking with XLL (eXtensible Link
Language)

* Created their own internal and external Style Sheets
* Included Metadata in web pages
* Submitted a page with Metadata to a search engine

Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a
browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST have authored
simple Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as those
for including images and hypertext links is essential. Experience of
using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening and
closing applications such as a Web browser would be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
