The rational reason to do so is that it make it easier for those
of us that want to send responses to the author rather that the
list. Further, the From: marker only tells us where the message
was sent from, not where the author wants responses sent to
anyway. Altering the Reply-To: address inconveniences
both the recipients of the articles and the authors of those
articles.
And yes, I've seen it on every other mailing list I've ever
subscribed to. The fact that the desired behavior was the
default for the old list server, and it was the default for this
new list server, is plenty of evidence that it's in widespread use.
