Dear Amy,
As requested here are two recommendations from my recent research trip to
the Lesser
Antilles:
*Castries, St Lucia*: For 25 US dollars (inclusive) per night for a clean,
safe room, the Sundale Guesthouse was an excellent base. Breakfast is
included. Shared TV room, own bathroom. The guesthouse is about 3 km
north-east of Castries in Sunny Acres, but is a 2 minute walk from bus stops
(the 1A) on the main road from Castries to Gros Islet. Buses cost around 1
EC dollar to either location, and are regular and run late (I caught one
back from the Friday night Gros Islet jump-up at 2.30 am). There's a mall
with supermarket, chemist and Cable and Wireless with internet access about
400 yards across the road from the guesthouse. tel: St Lucia 452 4120
*Basseterre, St Kitts*: For a group of 2 or more, Earle's Vacation Home in
the Shadwell area was good value at 57 US dollars per night for 2 people
(incl. tax). There's cable TV, and the room includes a good kitchen and your
own balcony. Some of the rooms had air con. Tel: St Kitts 465 7546.
By comparison, as the cheapest single option I could find elsewhere in
Basseterre, 41 US dollars per night bought me a windowless room with air-con
and a badly tuned TV at Glimbaro Guest House, Cayon Street.
Remember - these prices were all just after the start of the low season.
They might drop a bit further over the summer, but may increase to up to
twice the price between December and March.
Best of luck with your research,
