As chair of the BSI sub-committee leading on this Standard, IDT 2/17, I
want to clarify the position:
if you belong to one of the bodies represented on BSI IDT 2/17 - they
include the Society of Archivists, the Records Management Association, the
Association of Departmental Record Officers and the Institute of Information
Scientists among others - you should approach your representative about
obtaining a copy in order to review it and submit comments to BSI. You
should be able to obtain an electronic copy that way (it is in WORD 97 and
uses an ISO template). These representatives are responsible for ensuring
their community considers whether the Standard will meet their needs and, as
far as I am concerned, that includes supplying an electronic copy for that
purpose to individual members who request one. Certainly I have provided an
electronic copy (WORD 97, using an ISO template) to several people on this
basis. Anyone who wants a paper copy, or does not belong to a body
represented on IDT 2/17 should purchase a copy from BSI.
Philip Jones of Staffordshire represents RMS, Julie McLeod of Northumbria
University represents IIS and Phil Sawyer represents SoA. I am copying this
email to Philip and Julie to reassure them on this point. If you cannot get
in touch with them you can always try me.
A warning: Philip and I are both out of the country next week, at the ISO
meeting working on the Technical Report associated with the Standard. This
means we will be unable to respond to any requests next week.
Do please make the effort to look at the Standard and send your views
(electronically) to BSI. The deadline for comments is the end of November.
Shortly after that Philip, Julie and I and a few others making up a panel of
IDT 2/17 will get together to review all comments received and put together
the formal UK response, which is due to be sent in January.

> Pity that neither BSI, nor SoA nor RMS see fit to take a similar stance in
