The Wellcome Trust
CONSERVATOR
The Wellcome Trust is the UK's largest medical research charity. It also
supports a world class library for the History of Medicine and its
Conservation Studio deals with all aspects of preservation and conservation
within The Wellcome Library and its collections. These include Early
Printed books, Archives and Manuscripts, Iconographic material and the
Oriental Collection which contains material such as palm-leaves, birch bark
and papyrus as well as collections of Middle Eastern and Asian origin.
The Conservator will work as a member of a specialist team. Duties include
working for all collections in rotation, assisting with the exhibitions rota
and providing detailed reports in both areas.
Candidates should have a recognised qualification in book conservation
(degree/accreditation) and/or relevant experience amounting to at least five
years. A good knowledge of book structures plus proven skills in paper and
parchment conservation are essential. Good communication skills and a keen
attention to detail are also essential, as are computer literacy and the
ability to work well in a team environment. A knowledge of the conservation
of works of art on paper as well as photographs would be advantageous.
Salary will be on a scale from £20,842 to £30,373 p.a. plus excellent
benefits.
